Ethnic Foods have been identified as an important and emerging sector in the region. The Ethnic Food sector can be defined as follows:- |
"World inspired food and drink produced in our region (where possible) and sold through event catering and retail channels. This includes traditional South and East Asian cuisines, Mediterranean cuisines, Tex Mex as well as emerging sub-sectors such as Thai, Japanese, and the Caribbean etc." |
The fresh chilled Ethnic Foods Sector in the UK is valued at just short of STG1billion at retail sales prices and is growing at around 15% per annum. Sub segments are growing more rapidly than this. There are also very sizable ambient sectors (sauces, snacks etc) and a frozen sector. Catering and food service account for a significant quantity of sales. Overall, the total ethnic foods sector in the UK alone can be valued at STG5billion at retail selling prices. Geographically the Yorkshire and Humber regions are ideally situated to supply the whole of the UK. The region as a whole has a good transport infrastructure and excellent links to the continent via sea and air. Ethnic Foods is a highly dynamic sector relying heavily on new product development and innovation. In employment terms the sector is a significant employer in the manufacturing and retail (catering) sectors. Yorkshire and the Humber is the largest producing cluster for Ethnic Foods with major manufacturing centers in South Yorkshire, North East Lincolnshire, Hull region and Bradford region. >>MORE |
